3BM Spaces “QUEEN’S MANOR UPDATE”

3BM in association with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (LBHF) and the Queen’s Manor Primary School have received planning approval for the creation of a new Disabled Children’s Resource Centre and the redevelopment of the SEN Unit at Queen’s Manor Primary School in the planning committee held at the LBHF town hall on Tuesday the 14th March.

Queen’s Manor Primary School currently offers support for Special Educational Needs pupils as part of their curriculum. However, the existing 1950s timber block for SEN provision is currently in severe disrepair and lacks some of the spaces benefitting SEN pupils of today. As part of the project, we are demolishing the existing SEN block and rebuilding a larger, modern building. The new building will have larger classrooms with the latest technology, a teaching kitchen, a sensory room, break-out areas and improved building services. In addition to improving the SEN provision, the entire site of Queen’s Manor Primary School will be re-landscaped. This will greatly improve the external play provision for all children in the school. The proposed landscape provision also includes a Multi-Use Games Area which will improve sports provision throughout the year.

The Disabled Children’s Resource Centre will offer a new service to the borough. The details of the service offer are still being developed by the Social Services, however, in general, the centre will be a ‘drop-in respite’ for parents and children with varying levels of disability. The centre will have play spaces, quiet spaces, a sensory room, a kitchen, offices and training spaces. It will also offer advice to parents on a drop-in basis. It will cater for up to 20 children between ages 0 and 18 at any one time and it will be run on weekday evenings, weekends and holidays. The centre will have a small courtyard to allow free-flow between the external and internal spaces but it also has access to the wider playgrounds of the school, which are also being redeveloped as part of the project.

During the design process 3BM worked with the Local Authority to consult and encourage the involvement of parents, carers, staff and residents through workshops and public consultation events. This was an invaluable tool in forming the brief and offer but also helped form the architecture of the buildings. Besides the consultation process a major inspiration for the architectural design was the Grade II Listed main school building. This informed the material choices of natural stone cladding and timber-framed windows but also the overall design of the building elevations. The rhythmic repetition of tall and narrow windows in deep reveals picks out some of the key characteristics of the main building. The single-storey buildings are kept lower in height so they appear servient to the main building.
